Monday, March 22, 2010 Permission Slips (2 separate forms) Flyer The cost for the campout is $35, which includes food ($15) and ammunition ($20). Campers that are not going to use Troop ammo only need to pay the food cost ($15). Please sign up, and provide on sign-up sheet the requested information (Scouts are requested to let us know if they wish to work on merit badges, and adults are requested to let us know if they can bring good working .22 rifles and/or shotguns, and if the adults intend to use Troop ammo). In order to
participate in this event, it is required
that both adults and Scouts attend the gun safety meeting (date to be determined) That
meeting will provide each Scout with the opportunity to complete the academic
portion of the merit badge requirements for the Rifle Shooting and Shotgun Shooting
merit badges. Remember
that we are camping on private gun club property as the guest of Ned Newkirk
and the Maywood Rod and Gun Club. All
participants are expected to treat the club property and all weapons that we
are allowed to handle with care and respect. I will try to make available a very limited amount of .410 bore shotgun ammunition, which is intended to
introduce new shooters to shotgun shooting. This will not be for "fun" use, as it is costly.
Notes to
adults: 1. Weapons needed for use by Scouts Please let
me know if you are able to bring any of the following weapons (in good working
order!) to the shooting sports campout: .22 rilfles
(not semi-automatic and without scopes, since those cannot be used to earn the
Rifle Shooting merit badge) 20 gauge
shotguns 12 gauge
shotguns .410 bore
shotguns (one short barrel .410 gun is all that is needed) 2. Shooting by adults and non-Scouts Priority
must be given to the Scouts for time at the bench. However, adults and non-Scouts will still be
able to shoot. Adults that
bring their own weapons should also bring their own ammunition. Ned will be checking ammunition and weapons to
ensure that they are legal and safe. Please
do not bring tracer ammunition. Adults and non-Scouts that wish to shoot .22 rifle, 20g shotgun and 12g shotgun (using troop ammo) will need pay the full camping fee. Non-shooters and those not using Troop ammo can camp and/or participate without payment of the $35 ammo cost. 3. Hearing and
Eye Protection Hearing and eye protection is required. Scouts and adults should bring proper hearing and eye protection with them to this campout. Only a limited amount of extra goggles and ear protection will be available at the range, so to ensure that you get the most out of the weekend you are best-off by bringing your own. This important equipment can be obtained rather inexpensively at Walmart, Big 5, Bass Pro Shops, Turners, and other sporting goods / gun stores. |

![]() 1924 Easter Service
In April, 1909, Jacob Riis of New York, and a friend of President Theodore Roosevelt, was in town to give an address at the Mission Inn. He suggested holding an Easter sunrise service at the top of the mountain, and on the following Sunday, April 11th, 1909, they held the first outdoor Easter Sunrise Service in the United States at the top of the mount. Over the next decade the service grew to attract thousands and was imitated in other areas. The Easter service still takes place each year. A cross at the summit, the Peace Tower and Friendship Bridge near the top, and a shrine to St. Francis Assisi at the foot of the hill, still mark the faded visions of the past. |
